Chapter 15

After calling Cheryl early the next morning and reassuring herself that her friend had made it through the night, Marlena met Marty for a continental breakfast in the hotel lounge and commiserated over the sorry status of their love lives.

“We’re intelligent people,” Marty reasoned. “So how did we end up in these strange situations?”

Marlena shrugged. “I don’t think intelligence has anything to do with it. Our hearts did us in.”

“You’ve got that right. It amazes me that I can still love Cheryl after what she’s done. Doesn’t that make me an idiot?”

Marlena shook her head. She thought the opposite. “It means you’re very much in touch with your feelings.”

“Hold on a minute,” Marty said, interrupting her. “You’re talking to a macho man here, don’t go around saying I’m in touch with my feelings. You could ruin my reputation. Hey, you could ruin the reputation of my entire gender.”

“Don’t make jokes, Marty, I’m serious. Anger would probably be a much easier emotion for you to handle right now.”

“Don’t get me wrong,” he said. “I am angry with Cheryl. More angry than I’ve ever been with anybody. Last night I thought I hated her, but somewhere between the time I left your room and the time I dressed to meet you for breakfast this morning, I realized that though I hated what she’d done, I’m still very much in love with her.”

Marlena stirred her coffee idly and thought about her situation with Winston. “Then you two’ll work it out.”

“I wish I were as sure as you seem to be.”

“With love everything is possible,” she quipped, knowing that wasn’t the case. If it was, she and Winston would be together right now.

Marty dumped about four packets of sugar in his coffee. “You’ve been reading too many romance novels. Life doesn’t work that way.”

“You don’t have to tell me, Marty. I know. Believe me, I know.”

He stopped stirring his coffee and looked at her. “How are things between you and Winston?”

“Not much better than things between you and Cheryl. Winston doesn’t seem to be able to forgive me for what I did in the past.”

“That’s tough. What are you gonna do about it?”

She shrugged. She didn’t know if there was anything she could do. She couldn’t make him forgive her. “I’m looking for suggestions.”

“You must be desperate if you’re asking me. I can’t even handle my own life. I still can’t believe I have a seventeen-year-old daughter.”

“Well, you do,” she said. “And she’s a wonderful girl. You should be proud of her.”

“Damn Cheryl,” Marty muttered. “Why did she do this to me? To us? I loved her.”

Marlena could hear Winston’s voice asking the same questions and she didn’t have any more answers for Marty than she had for Winston. “It happened, Marty. You can’t change the present situation and neither can Cheryl. You’ve got to deal with it, if you really want a life with her.” In like manner, she and Winston had to deal with their problem if they wanted a life together.
